A seminar looking ahead to the foundation of the “Mppu Charter“.
New, interesting ways of working together.
It is enough to watch any television news broadcast to see that the world has lost peace. We are in a dark moment of history, but it is not the end of the world, it is the painful gestation period of a new era.
And it is on this “new era” that we must set our sights, our energy and a work for new creative politics.
For this reason the 20th anniversary of the Movement for politics & policy for unity was not a celebration, but a preparation to face this challenge, in the light of the charism of unity. In her message to the seminar, Maria Voce, president of the Focolare Movement, urged us to take that commitment.
The seminar, which was mainly followed on live streaming, was followed by Mppu Centres, members of parliament, diplomats and young people. There was also a variety of different faiths, languages and political cultures. It was interwoven with the “Dialogue with contemporary culture”, which gave us a rich content and opened up many other dimensions of action and thought (economics, law, sociology, communication etc.) to which politics must serve as an active background to the new challenges.
The Mppu Charter was formulated through the participation of all, with input from the writings of Chiara Lubich. It is composed of two parts: 1) the commitment towards a politics for unity; 2) the Mppu light, transparent and participatory organization
The first steps were immediately taken to set it in motion. First and foremost an entire afternoon was devoted to the formation of the international Agenda of Mppu, which indicated the city as the primary venue of politics. There was the report of the Mppu International Centre on what has been done over the last three years. Finally an inclusive process was proposed that will lead to the renewal of Mppu Centres on all levels and in three stages: widespread participation; synergy with the centers of the Focolare Movement; election of the president and co-president of each Mppu Centre.
The presence of representatives of New Humanity and Youth for a United World, or academic institutions, such as Sophia University Institute, was a confirmation of a stronger synergy, something that is already happening and we hope will continue to grow.
There were some interesting ideas for Mppu schools for young people and some novel experiences from the world of politics. For example, there is a Korean Buddhist who would like to deepen the bond between the teachings of Buddha and the politics of unity and, two representatives of the Democratic Republic of Congo, shaken by the turmoil of the postponement of the elections, both of whom are committed to transparency and democracy: “We come from two different parties and everything points to our division. But we remain united for the good of our country.”
